Antipyretic, antiemetic, expectorant, hemostatic
This herb is used for thick, yellow, hard-to-expectorate phlegm
when there is respiratory infection, and for vomiting caused by
heat in the stomach, for which it can be combined with pinellia
and coptis. It can also be used for morning sickness and a restless
fetus when combined with scutellaria and pinellia.
Chinese herbalists also use this herb to cool blood heat for various
symptoms of bleeding, such as hemoptysis (spitting up of blood and
phlegm), hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (bloody nose),
and metrorrhagia (menstrual flooding).
